Installing Books on iPad with Managed Distribution and Lightspeed

Considerations

  • Managed Distribution Books are user assignable ONLY
  • Managed Distribution Books cannot be reassigned once assigned to the user (the license is taken by the user forever)
  • This guide assumes your school is already enrolled in Apple School Manager and Apple’s Device Enrolment Program and has purchased a valid license for Lightspeed Mobile Manager

1.  Purchase book in Apple School Manager and assign to location

Login to Apple School Manager with an Administrator account. https://school.apple.com

Select Apps and Books. Enter the name of the book in the search field and tap Enter on the keyboard.

Select “Assign to” location from the drop-down menu, enter the quantity of licenses required and select Get.

2.  Create Managed Apple ID in Apple School Manager

Login to Apple School Manager with an Administrator account. https://school.apple.com

Select Accounts and select Add New Account icon.

Complete the Add New Account form and select save.

Select Reset Password and set it to something you will remember.

3.  Invite users to the Managed Distribution Program

An invitation link has been emailed to the user, you can either open the email on the iPad you wish to link to the user or retrieve the link from Lightspeed.

To retrieve the link from Lightspeed; open Safari on the iPad and sign into Lightspeed. https://lsmdm.com

At the top level in Lightspeed (Home) go to Settings > Managed Distribution > View Users.

Copy and paste the Invite URL into a new tab in Safari and follow the prompts to sign into the App Store and enrol the user in the School’s Apple Device Enrolment Program.

The same Apple ID can be used to sign in on up to 5 devices.

4.  Create group and user in Lightspeed. Assign device, user and book to group

Login to Lightspeed https://lsmdm.com

Select “Switch to another group icon” near the top left corner.

Navigate to the level you want to create the group.

Select Groups. Select + plus icon to add new group.

Fill in the form to create a new group and select the Tick icon to create the group (Name File is mandatory; the rest can be entered as required depending on your scenario).

Open the newly created group.

Select Users and select the + icon to create a new user.

Fill in the form to create a new user and select the Tick icon when finished (leave the password section blank if you do not require the user to sign into Lightspeed).

Highlight the newly created user and select the + icon next to Devices heading.

Search for the device to be assigned to the user, highlight the device and select Save.

Select Devices from the left menu. Search for the device and select add membership.

Select Books from the left menu and select Install Book

-- Select Book Installation Type – Managed Distribution

-- Select an MD Service – Your Managed Distribution Token (usually only 1 token per organisation)

Select the books to want to install and select Install Selected Books.

Ensure restriction 'Require iTunes Store password for all purchases’ is switched OFF

Turn App Age restrictions OFF or Apple automatically enables restriction 'Require iTunes Store password for all purchases
